- Can I run synthetic oil?
- How long should I wait to
change to synthetic?
- If I switch, can I go back ?
- What's the real scoop behind the
BMW roundel?
- How did the "Boxer" engine get
its start?
The simple answer is yes! Synthetic vs. Dino Juice (fossil
oil), has been debated for years ad nauseam. If you change your oil every 3k,
then yes stick with Dino. If you want to run the full 6k without an oil change,
go with Syn.
The jury is still out on this. But everyone I have dealt
with and spoken to recommend waiting until you have at least 12 to 15k on the
engine. I switched to syn at my 12K service.
Simple answer, yes! Why you would want to is another
thing. I recommend doing what I call a five quart flush. This is where you get
the engine hot, drain your oil and remove filter. Put the drain plug back in,
and with the spark plug wires disconnected... and the oil filter still off, turn
the engine over for a while until you see all of the oil drain from the filter
area.
Install and close all drain plugs, filters, then fill with your new oil.
Years ago, BMW marketing department came up with the
romantic story about the airplane engine legacy and that the roundel represents
the blue sky and white clouds as seen through the propeller of the airplanes
engine.
Truth... all it is is an engineering symbol colored in
with the colors adopted by BMW. Alpine white and blue, representing the country
(snow and blue skies).
Because of the airplane engine heritage, after WW1 and the
signing of the Versailles Treaty... BMW was ordered to make anything they
wanted, as long as it was not what they produced during the war.
They decided on motorcycles. How do you keep an air cooled engine cool? Put them
out in the wind!
